Robot mower for steep slopes: which one can handle your lawn?
Some links are affiliate links: if you buy after clicking, I may earn a commission. The price stays the same for you, and the order of the models does not depend on it. How this site is funded
The short version. Before choosing a robot mower for steep slopes, measure your slope in percent, not degrees. Up to 45%, 16 models in the database qualify, from €899. Between 55% and 80%, the cheapest is the Mammotion LUBA mini 2 AWD 1000 (€1,399). Above 80%, only the Navimow X4 range claims 84%.
The Navimow X4 is also the priciest on this list: if your slope stays under 80%, the Navimow X4 alternatives page shows how much you can save.
Step 1: measure your real slope
People often mix up degrees and percent: a lawn “at 45” is almost always at 45%, not 45°. A 45° slope rises one metre for every metre travelled, which is 100%, steeper than garden steps. No mower in the database claims it.
Work out your garden’s real slope
Lay a 1 m board perfectly level (spirit level) from the top of the slope, then measure the height between the end of the board and the ground.
Your slope30 %16.7°
19 model(s) in the database handle this slope.
Percent vs degrees: conversion table
| Stated slope | In degrees | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
| 30% | 16.7° | Gentle bank, lawn on a slight incline |
| 45% | 24.2° | Clearly sloping, you feel it walking up |
| 55% | 28.8° | Steep bank, hard for a push mower |
| 80% | 38.7° | Very steep, risky for a ride-on |
| 84% | 40.0° | Highest claim in the database (Navimow X4) |
| 100% | 45.0° | No mower in the database |
Formula: slope in % = tangent of the angle × 100. The table uses the same formula as the calculator.
Best robot mower for steep slopes: models rated above 50%
Above 50%, only three families are left in the database: Navimow X4 (84%), Mammotion LUBA AWD (80%) and Navimow i2 LiDAR Pro (55%), plus the Dreame A2 (50%), for which I have no recent price.

Manufacturer data checked on 10/10/2026; prices and availability checked on 12/10/2026 on the official stores. “n/a”: the manufacturer does not give this figure on its spec sheet.
Almost all of them have all-wheel drive (AWD). Mammotion uses it across the LUBA family, Navimow on its X4 and i2 AWD. The rear-wheel-drive YUKA mini 2 stops at 45%. Within the LUBA family, the flagship LUBA 3 AWD claims no more slope than the LUBA mini 2 AWD; the price gap is detailed in the Mammotion LUBA 3 alternatives.
Between 30% and 45%: plenty of choice
If the calculator gives you under 45%, you do not need to pay for high-end all-wheel drive. The Navimow i2 AWD and i2 LiDAR and the Mammotion YUKA mini 2 all claim 45%. Between them, the difference is navigation and area; the Navimow vs Mammotion comparison puts them side by side for each lawn size.
For gentle slopes (up to 30%), even entry models such as the Navimow i105E will do. For a small, mildly sloping lawn, the robot mower for 500 m² page compares the correctly sized models.
Three traps on sloping ground
1. Slope at the boundary. Several manufacturers state a higher working slope than the slope allowed at the edge of the area. Husqvarna states 30% working but 20% at the boundary on its Automower NERA models. If your slope runs down to a fence or a flower bed, the lower figure is the one that matters.
2. Margin. Manufacturer figures assume dry grass. Keep around ten points between your measured slope and the stated one.
3. Satellite signal at the bottom. Sloping gardens are often edged by hedges or walls that hide part of the sky. A model that adds LiDAR or a camera to RTK keeps its bearings. The list of robot mowers without an RTK antenna shows which technology each model uses.
The right robot mower for your steep terrain
The quiz below takes your slope and area and keeps only compatible models. All the data is also available as open robot mower data, and every model is in the wire-free robot mower comparison.

Safety margin applied: capacity ≥ area × 1.2. Models with an undisclosed slope are excluded as soon as a slope is entered.
FAQ
Can a robot mower handle a 45-degree slope?
No, none in the database. 45 degrees is a 100% slope. The highest claim is 84% (40°) for the Navimow X4 range, then 80% (38.6°) for Mammotion’s LUBA AWD models. Many people mix up percent and degrees: a spec sheet saying “45%” means about 24°.
What is the cheapest wire-free robot mower for a steep slope?
In my 12 October 2026 check, the Mammotion LUBA mini 2 AWD 1000 (80%, 1,000 m²) at €1,399 is the cheapest above 55%. Above 80%, you need the Navimow X420 (84%) at €2,499.
How do I measure my garden’s slope?
Lay a one-metre board perfectly level (check with a spirit level) from the top of the slope, measure the height between the end of the board and the ground, and enter both values in the calculator on this page. 30 cm over 100 cm = 30%.
Does the stated slope apply everywhere in the garden?
Not always. Some manufacturers distinguish maximum working slope from maximum slope at the boundary. Husqvarna, for example, states 30% working slope but 20% at the boundary on its Automower NERA models. If your slope runs into a boundary, keep a margin.
